Supplying Labels on Roll
If you prefer to have your labels printed by your own printer, that is certainly possible. However, it is important that the labels can be processed properly on our machines. Please ensure that they meet the following specifications:
- Antistatic: Labels must be antistatic to prevent them from being attracted to the machine or bottle.
- Core size of 76 mm: This ensures proper mounting on the machine.
- Maximum roll diameter: This depends on the filling and labeling line (please inquire beforehand).
- Maximum label height: This also depends on the filling and labeling line (please inquire beforehand).
- Risk: Any issues or difficulties during the adjustment or labeling process are at your own risk and expense.
- Roll winding: This depends on the processing of the filling and labeling line (please inquire beforehand).
- Thickness, material type, and label position: These factors all affect the machine settings.
Labels supplied by us
While you can choose to supply your own labels, there are several advantages to having us print your labels:
- Optimal compatibility: We ensure that the labels are perfectly suited to our machines, minimizing the chance of problems during setup and labeling.
- Quality control: We check every aspect of the labels to ensure they meet the requirements for the labeling process, from material type to finishing.
- Cost and time savings: By having us print your labels, you save time and possibly avoid extra costs for adjusting your labels to our machines. We make sure everything works correctly from the start.
- Efficiency: Our labels are optimized for smooth processing on the filling and labeling lines, ensuring faster throughput and reduced downtime.
- No risk of errors: Outsourcing label production to us ensures you won’t face compatibility or technical issues with your supplied labels, as we have already thoroughly checked them.
- Often cheaper than through your design agency: In many cases, printing labels through us is even cheaper than having them done by a design agency.
Label Specifications
To ensure that your design is printed perfectly, we ask you to follow the submission specifications below. We are working hard on a solution so you can upload your designs via our website in the future. Until then, you can send the files to info@4msp.nl or use Wetransfer.com. Please submit your artwork in PDF format according to the specifications below.
Submitting Files in PDF Format
Always submit your files separately, with only one design per document. If your packaging has a front and back label, submit these with “Front” and “Back” in the file name, each in its own document. The rule of thumb is: any print material that is printed separately should be submitted separately.
Ensure that all logos, images, and fonts are embedded so they can be properly printed.
Note: Images that are not embedded are either not included in the document or are included in low quality, meaning they may print in low resolution or not print at all. Since we do not have access to your design, we cannot check if anything is missing or misaligned.
Margins
Please ensure a text margin and bleed of at least 2 mm. These margins are essential to ensure that text and images are properly positioned on the label and prevent important elements from being cut off during production.
Text Margin
Make sure that text, logos, and images are at least 2 mm inside your format or die line. Slight shifts cannot always be prevented during printing and finishing. By placing important elements within the text margin, you ensure they are not lost. The text margin is indicated by a green border.
Bleed
Ensure a bleed of at least 2 mm. Do not place text or images in this area, only let the colors extend beyond the edge. This prevents unwanted white borders and ensures a clean finish. The bleed area is indicated by a red border.
Hidden Elements or Layers
Remove any hidden elements or layers from your design before uploading the file. These hidden layers will always become visible when converting to print and could unintentionally appear on the label. Always carefully check the final proof after uploading your file.
Die Line Deviation
Take into account a die line deviation of 2 mm around your design. This is a standard in the printing industry. We are happy to advise you on optimizing your design. If you have any questions, email us at info@4msp.nl.
Die Line
It is not necessary to add die lines for standard shape labels. We will ensure the label is cut to your desired size. If you add die lines incorrectly, they will be printed on the label, which we want to avoid. This can result in unwanted lines appearing on the final product. Die lines are only needed for specific shapes or when the design needs to be cut in a particular way. It is important that you do not add die lines unless explicitly required, as it can affect the final result.
If you do add a die line, it should be set up in the document in such a way that it is excluded from the print. Die lines are usually set in magenta to make them stand out and easily recognized as cut lines. This ensures the die line is correctly identified and handled during the production process without appearing on the final product.
Crop or Cut Marks
We recommend submitting your design without crop or cut marks. The label will be correctly die-cut without additional marks. Be sure not to check the printer’s marks when exporting your file.
Note: Crop and cut marks are mainly intended for traditional die-cutting methods where manual cutting is done. For digital processing, these marks are often unnecessary. Digital printing and cutting machines can automatically cut the design based on the die lines in your file, without needing additional marks. Adding crop or die-cut marks may cause them to appear unintentionally on your label, which we want to avoid.
Color Mode
We recommend submitting your design in CMYK color mode. Printing is always done in CMYK. If you upload an RGB file, it will be converted to CMYK. Small color differences may occur during this conversion. For the most accurate result, we suggest submitting your file directly in CMYK.
Fonts
Make sure that the fonts in your design are converted to outlines or that the used fonts are included. When exporting a PDF, you can specify this. If you do not do this, the fonts may not display correctly when printed, unless they are converted to outlines.
Minimum Font Size
The minimum font size we recommend is 4 pt for regular text and 6 pt for display text. Font sizes smaller than these can result in unreadable text and issues with alignment.
EAN Code
If you want to place an EAN code on your label, ensure there is at least 32 mm of white space around the EAN-13 code to ensure readability. The EAN code itself must be at least 32 mm in size for guaranteed readability and proper resolution. It is essential to maintain sufficient white space around the barcode and follow the GS1 specifications. More information can be found on the official GS1 website: GS1 Technical Guidelines.
Note: You may not use arbitrary barcode numbers. These must be registered with GS1 to ensure they are unique and correct.
Minimum Line Thickness
For lines in your design, the minimum thickness should be 0.10 mm. For display lines, we recommend a thickness of 0.15 mm.
Multiple Designs
If you want to print multiple designs with the same variables, please indicate this when creating your product. We will consider this when preparing your quote. Note: The rates you receive are only valid for the specified quantities and combinations. Different quantities or combinations will result in a new quote.
We kindly ask you to carefully consider the desired quantities beforehand, as creating the quote and entering this information requires time and care.
Corners
The corners of a square or rectangular label will automatically be rounded with a standard radius of 2 mm.
White Ink
If you have chosen a silver or transparent material for your label, we recommend using white ink. This prevents the metallic effect in silver from shining through the colors, or makes the label less transparent with transparent materials. For a partial metallic look, you can use white ink only on specific areas.
For example, if you want to create gold on your label, add a hint of yellow to the artwork without white ink, and use white ink only behind the black. This will create the correct metallic finish.
Authentic Paper
For authentic paper, the use of white ink can help enhance the colors and minimize the beige effect of the material. However, be aware that the label will always have a light beige appearance, even with white ink. For a partial white ink layer, you can ensure that some parts retain the original paper appearance, while others are fully printed.
File Setup for White Ink
Create a second layer for the white ink areas in your design. Add any color and name it “white ink,” setting it as a spot color. Make sure the white ink layer is set to “overprint fill” in your design settings in Illustrator. This ensures the white ink is correctly displayed in the final print version.
With these guidelines, you can be confident that your labels will be produced perfectly. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at info@4msp.nl.
